Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojna (PMKSY)

Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojna was launched on the 1st of July, 2015 with the vision of‘Har Khet ko pani’ to extend the coverage of irrigation and improving water use efficiency.Aimed at ensuring a focused approach to micro irrigation with end-to-end solutions on source creation, distribution, management, field application and extension activities, PMKSY has the following objectives:

  • To achieve convergence of investments in irrigation at the field level.
  • To expand cultivable area under assured irrigation.
  • To improve on-farm water use efficiency to reduce wastage of water.
  • To enhance the adoption of precision-irrigation and other water-saving technologies.
  • To enhance recharge of aquifers.
  • To introduce sustainable water conservation practices by exploring the feasibility of reusing treated municipal waste-water for peri-urban agriculture.
  • To attract greater private investment in the precision irrigation systems.
Programme components of PMKSY:

Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojna was launched on the 1st of July, 2015 with the vision of‘Har Khet ko Pani’ to extend the coverage of irrigation and improving water use efficiency.Aimed at ensuring a focused approach to micro-irrigation with end-to-end solutions on source creation, distribution, management, field application and extension activities, PMKSY has the following objectives:

  • Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP): To focus on faster completion of ongoing Major and Medium Irrigation projects being implemented by MOWR, RD&GR.
  • PMKSY “Har Khet ko Pani”: To focus on water plenty to water-scarce areas, supplementing rainwater harvesting beyond IWMP & MGNREGA, repair, restoration, renovation of traditional water bodies, etc. being implemented by MoWR, RD&GR.
  • PMKSY: To focus on micro-level storage structures, efficient water conveyance & application, precision irrigation systems, topping up of input cost beyond MGNREGA permissible limits, secondary storage, water lifting devices, extension activities, coordination and management being implemented by DAC&FW.
  • PMKSY (Watershed Development): To focus on ridge area treatment, drainage line treatment, soil and moisture conservation, water harvesting structure, livelihood support activities and other watershed works being implemented by DoLR.
  • Under PMKSY – Per Drop More Crop, both state and the central government, on an average, contribute to 55% and 45% of the total finances incurred in setting up micro-irrigation. Nevertheless, state-specific variations exist.
